Frequently asked questions

Getting started

What are Now, Tomorrow and Later for?

They work like pages in a notebook. Now is today's page. Tomorrow is the next page. Later is for things you want to remember someday. You can rename them, change their colors, and add lists of your own, up to 10.

How do I put Now or Later on my Home Screen?

On iPhone or iPad, open the app in Safari, tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen. On Android, open it in Chrome, tap the ⋮ menu, then Add to Home screen or Install app. On a Mac, use Safari's File → Add to Dock, or Chrome's install button in the address bar.

Once it's installed it opens like any other app and works without an internet connection.

Does it cost anything?

No. Now or Later is free, with no ads and no accounts.

Your day

Why did my Tomorrow todos move into Now?

Each morning, unfinished Tomorrow todos move into Now, the way you'd copy them onto the next page of a notebook. To stop this, open Settings and turn off Move unfinished Tomorrow todos into Now.

Where did my finished todos go?

A checked-off todo stays in its list for the rest of the day, then moves to Done, the last list on the right, grouped by the day you finished it. In Settings you can have finished todos move to Done right away instead.

Done keeps everything you've finished. It shows the latest 100, with Show more below them. Todos finished more than three months ago are tucked away so the app stays quick: searching finds them, and Look further back at the bottom of Done shows them. Tap ↩ beside any todo to put it back, unchecked, on the list it came from.

I deleted something by mistake. Can I get it back?

Right after you delete, move or check off a todo, a note at the bottom of the screen offers Undo for a few seconds. On a computer, ⌘Z (or Ctrl-Z) works while it's showing.

If that has gone, you can restore an earlier backup. See backups below.

Lists and todos

How do I move a todo to another list?

Drag it by the ⋮⋮ handle on its left. Or tap ••• on the todo and pick a list under Move to. With a keyboard, select a todo with the arrow keys and press ⇧ with ← or →.

How do I rename, recolor or delete a list?

Tap a list's name to rename it. Tap the colored dot beside the name to change its color. Tap ••• to rename it, move it left or right, or delete it. Deleting a list asks first, and can be undone.

How do I put away a list I've finished, like a packing list?

Check off everything on it. A note pops up with Archive list, and the same choice is in the list's ••• menu, which asks before archiving. Nothing is archived unless you choose it, so a list you keep reusing can just stay put.

Archived lists wait at the top of Done and don't count toward your 10. Tap one to see its todos, or tap Use again to bring it back with everything unchecked, ready for the next trip.

Now, Tomorrow and Later can't be archived. Archiving a shared list archives it for everyone on it.

Can I add a todo without opening the app?

Yes. What works depends on the device.

iPhone and iPad. Apple doesn't let Home Screen web apps appear in the share sheet or offer long-press shortcuts, so use the Shortcuts app instead. This needs sync turned on. In Settings, open Sync, then Advanced, and find Quick add from Shortcuts. Then make a shortcut:

  1. Open Shortcuts, tap +, and name it something like Add to Now.
  2. Add an Ask for Input action (Text) with the prompt What needs doing?
  3. Add a Get Contents of URL action. Paste the address from Copy address as the URL. Tap the arrow to show more: set Method to POST, add a header named Authorization with the value Bearer, a space, and the token from Copy access token. Set Request Body to JSON and add a Text field named text set to Provided Input.
  4. Optional: add a field named to with tomorrow, later or a list's name to add somewhere other than Now.

Now you can say "Hey Siri, Add to Now", or put it on the Action button, Back Tap or a Lock Screen widget. To add from the share sheet, turn on Show in Share Sheet in the shortcut's details and use Shortcut Input instead of Ask for Input. Each line of text becomes its own todo, so a pasted list works too. The todo shows up in the app at its next sync.

Android and Chrome on a computer. Once Now or Later is installed, it appears in the share sheet: share a link or some text to it and it lands in Now. Long-press the app icon (or right-click it in the Dock or taskbar) for Add to Now, Add to Tomorrow and Add to Later.

Any device. Opening now-or-later.app/?add=Buy%20milk adds "Buy milk" to Now, and &to=tomorrow picks another list. On iPhone, links open in Safari rather than the Home Screen app, and the two keep separate lists unless both are syncing, so the Shortcut above is the better choice there.

Sync across your devices

How do I use the same lists on my phone and computer?

Sync is optional. Without it, your lists stay on the device you're using. The easiest way to start is an invite link from whoever runs the sync service. Open it, pick a name for your lists if you like, and tap Join. The lists already on that device come along.

You can also open Settings, then Sync, then Set up by hand, paste a sync address and access token, and tap Save and sync.

I lost a phone. How do I stop it syncing?

Open Settings, then Sync, then Advanced. Devices added with a link lists each device you connected with a device link. Tap Remove beside one and it stops syncing. Its lists stay on it, but nothing new reaches it.

What does the badge at the top mean?

Most of the time there's no badge, which means everything is fine. It only shows up when something needs your attention:

  • Offline: there's no connection right now. Keep going; your changes are saved on this device and sync when you're back online. A small amber ring marks todos that haven't synced yet.
  • Sync problem: the sync service refused, often because the token is wrong or the device was removed. Tap the badge for details.

Settings shows whether sync is on and which lists you're syncing with.

A todo changed back after I edited it. Why?

If the same todo or list was changed on two devices, the newest change wins. When yours is the one that lost, a note says so, for example “Buy milk” was also changed on another device. Edit it again and it will sync.

Sharing a list

Can I share one list with someone without sharing everything?

Yes. Open the list's ••• menu and choose Share list…. You get a link to send. When the other person opens it and taps Add list, the list shows up with theirs. Everything else stays private.

You both see the same name, color and todos, and changes show up for both. Each of you can put the list wherever you like. A shared list has a small people icon next to its count.

Both people need sync turned on with the same sync service. A list can have up to 10 people, and it counts toward your 10 lists. Now and Tomorrow can't be shared, because each morning moves unfinished todos from Tomorrow into Now. Make a new list to share instead.

How do I see who's on a shared list, or take someone off?

Choose People and links in the list's ••• menu. It shows everyone on the list and any invite links nobody has used yet. Whoever shared the list first can take a person off it or take back an unused link. Anyone on the list can make a new link with Invite someone, there or in the ••• menu. A new link is copied for you and shows at the top of People and links with a Copy link button. Each link works for one person.

To stop sharing yourself, choose Leave shared list…. The list comes off your device and stays with everyone else. When the last person leaves, it's deleted.

My invite link doesn't work.

Each invite link works once and expires after 14 days. It also stops working if the person who made it has left the list. Ask for a new one. If you already joined on another device, use Copy link for another device on that device instead.

Backups and your data

How do backups work?

In Settings under Backups, Download backup saves a file with every list, todo and Done item, older ones included. On a phone, choose Save to Files. Restore from file… puts everything in that file back. Download CSV makes a spreadsheet you can open in Numbers or Excel, but it can't be restored.

When sync is on, the sync service also saves a copy each night your lists have changed, and at least once a week, and keeps each copy for 30 days. Settings lists those copies, and you can restore or download any of them. Before any restore, one more copy is saved so the restore can be undone the same way. If that copy can't be made, say you're offline, you're asked first. Right after a restore, Undo on the note at the bottom puts things back the way they were.

Nightly copies hold the last three months of Done. Older finished todos are kept separately and aren't affected by a restore.

How do I delete my synced lists?

If you joined with an invite link, open Settings, then Sync, then Advanced, and tap Delete synced board…. This permanently removes your lists, their nightly copies and every access token for them from the sync service, right away. Your other devices stop syncing and keep the lists they show, unless you also tick Also erase the lists on this device. Download a backup first if you might want your lists later.

If your sync was set up by hand with a token from the sync service's owner, the button isn't shown. Email hello@tweetingbirds.com and I'll remove it.

How do I erase everything from a device?

Your lists live in your browser's storage for this site. To erase them, clear the website data for this site in your browser settings, or delete the Home Screen app. On iPhone, go to Settings → Apps → Safari → Advanced → Website Data.

If you use sync, the sync service has a copy too. See How do I delete my synced lists?

Can I keep my lists on my own Cloudflare account?

Yes. The sync service is a small Cloudflare Worker that runs on Cloudflare's free plan. The guide to running your own sync Worker walks through it in about fifteen minutes. Then put your Worker's address and token in Settings, or invite your family from it.

Look and feel

Can I use dark mode?

Yes. Now or Later follows your device's light or dark setting. To pick one for this device only, open Settings and choose Light or Dark under Appearance.

Are there keyboard shortcuts?

Yes, on a computer. Press ? to see them all. For example, N adds a todo to Now, X checks off the selected todo, and ⌘ , opens Settings.

If single keys get in the way, say with a screen reader or another app's shortcuts, turn on Hold Option at the top of that sheet. Then the shortcuts that work anywhere need ⌥ Option (Alt on Windows), so N becomes ⌥ N.

How do I get the newest version?

Updates arrive on their own. If one comes out while the app is open, a note says so, and Settings shows a Reload button. What's New says what changed.
