Now or Later is a todo list made by Tweeting Birds LLC (“we”). Your todos are yours. The app has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and your lists are never sold or shared for marketing. This page explains exactly where your lists are kept and who can see them.
The short version
- Your lists are saved on your device first.
- If you turn on sync, a copy is also kept by the sync service so your other devices can get it. Sync is off until you set it up.
- When sync is on, a nightly backup copy is kept for 30 days, then deleted automatically.
- Nothing about you is collected beyond the lists you write and the settings you choose.
What the app stores
Now or Later stores what you put into it:
- Your lists: their names, colors and order.
- Your todos: their text, which list they're in, whether they're done, and when they were added, changed and finished.
- Board settings, such as whether unfinished Tomorrow todos move into Now each morning.
- Settings for each device: light or dark appearance, whether shortcuts use the Option key, and the sync address and access token if you set up sync.
- If you join sync with an invite link, the name you give your board, if any.
It doesn't ask for your name, email address, location, contacts or anything else about you. It doesn't use cookies.
On your device
Everything above is saved in your browser's storage for this site, on the device you're using. Without sync, your lists never leave that device. Erasing the website data for this site, or deleting the app from your Home Screen, erases them.
Sync
Sync is optional and off until you open an invite link or enter a sync address and access token in Settings. When it's on:
- The app sends your board (the lists, todos and board settings above) to the sync service after each change, and checks it for changes from your other devices about every 20 seconds while the app is on screen.
- The sync service is a small program running on Cloudflare Workers, which saves your board in Cloudflare Workers KV. Everything sent to and from it is encrypted in transit with HTTPS.
- Your access token decides which board you get. Each token opens one board, and only that board and its backups.
- When you join with an invite link, the sync service makes a new board and a new access token for you. It stores your board's name (if you gave one), when you joined, and the short note the person who invited you wrote to remember who the invite was for. Whoever invited you can see your board's name and when you joined. It stores only a scrambled fingerprint (a SHA-256 hash) of your token, never the token itself. Unused invites expire after at most 30 days.
- When you connect another device with a link, the sync service gives that device its own access token and stores the kind of device it is (for example iPhone or Mac) and when it was added, so Settings can list your devices and you can remove one. The link itself works once and expires after a day.
- A todo added from a Shortcut waits in a small inbox on the sync service until your board picks it up, and is deleted from there within two days.
- If you share a list, that one list (its name, color and todos) is stored on its own and shows on the board of everyone you've shared it with, along with each person's board name. Nobody on a shared list can see anything else on your board. If you leave the list or delete your synced board, you're taken off it and it stays with the others. When the last person leaves, it's deleted. Todos you added to a shared list stay on it after you leave or delete your board, and the other people's nightly copies keep them for up to 30 days.
- The sync service doesn't keep a log of your requests and doesn't store anything except your board, its older finished todos and its backups.
The sync service is run by Tweeting Birds LLC using a Cloudflare account it controls. Your board is not end-to-end encrypted, so Tweeting Birds LLC could technically read it. We don't look at your lists except to help when you ask, for example to recover something you lost. If you run your own sync service, your board is stored in your own Cloudflare account instead.
Backups and deleted items
- When sync is on, the sync service saves a copy of your board each night it has changed, and at least once a week. Each copy is deleted automatically after 30 days.
- Before you restore a backup, one more copy is saved so the restore can be undone. It is also deleted after 30 days.
- Finished todos older than three months are stored separately from the rest of your board, on your device and (with sync) on the sync service, so the app stays quick. They're kept like the rest of Done, and deleted with your synced board.
- When you delete a todo or list, the app keeps a hidden record of it for up to 60 days, so your other devices learn it was deleted instead of bringing it back. After 60 days the record is removed.
- Backup files you download with Download backup or Download CSV are saved where you choose. They aren't sent anywhere.
Services the app relies on
Like any website, the services below see basic technical details when your device connects to them, such as your IP address and browser type. They don't see your lists, except Cloudflare, which stores your board when sync is on.
- GitHub Pages serves the app's files. See the GitHub Privacy Statement.
- Google Fonts serves the app's typefaces. See the Google Fonts privacy FAQ.
- Cloudflare runs the sync service and stores synced boards and backups. See the Cloudflare Privacy Policy.
Your choices
- See your data. Download backup in Settings saves everything the app has for your board.
- Stop syncing. Clear the sync address and token in Settings. Your lists stay on the device, and nothing more is sent.
- Delete your synced board. If you joined with an invite, tap Delete synced board… in Settings. Your board, its older finished todos, all of its backups and its access token are removed from the sync service right away. For 30 days afterward the service keeps only the token's fingerprint, with nothing else attached, so your other devices are told the board was deleted and turn sync off instead of sending your lists back. If your board was set up by hand, or you can't reach the app, email hello@tweetingbirds.com and it will be removed, usually within a few days. If you run your own sync service, delete it from the app the same way, or delete the keys for your board in your Cloudflare dashboard.
- Delete everything on a device. Clear the website data for this site, or delete the app from your Home Screen.
Children
Now or Later isn't directed at children under 13 and doesn't knowingly collect personal information from them. Because the app has no accounts and asks for nothing about you, the only information it holds is what's written in the lists.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new effective date, and important changes will be noted in What's New.
